Terms of Service

Last updated September 21, 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Rhett Lindell ("we", "us"), who operates the Shelfsmith app. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use Shelfsmith. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information.

1. Who can use Shelfsmith

You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms on your behalf. You are responsible for keeping your password secure and for activity on your account.

2. Households

A household shares one pantry, shopping list and cooking history. Anyone with your household's invite code can join it and see and change its shared information, so share the code only with people you trust. The household owner can remove members. If you leave, or delete your account, what you added stays with the household for the remaining members. When a household's last member leaves, it is deleted with all of its data.

3. Shelfsmith Plus subscriptions

Some features, including receipt scanning, are available only with a Shelfsmith Plus subscription. When offered:

4. Using Shelfsmith properly

You agree not to misuse the app, including by: trying to access other households' data or our systems without permission; interfering with or overloading the service; reverse engineering it except where the law allows; using it to break the law; or using automated means to extract recipes or other content.

5. Your content

You keep ownership of what you add, such as pantry items, lists and household names. You give us permission to store, process and display it only as needed to run Shelfsmith for you and your household. You are responsible for having the right to upload the receipt photos you scan.

6. Our content

The app, its design, and its recipe collection, including recipe text, instructions and nutrition figures, belong to us. We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use them in the app for your own non-commercial cooking.

7. Food, health and safety

Please read this section carefully.

8. Availability and changes

We work to keep Shelfsmith running and improving, but it may sometimes be unavailable, and we may change or remove features. If we stop offering Shelfsmith, we will give reasonable notice where we can, and you can request a copy of your information before it closes.

9. Ending your use

You can stop using Shelfsmith and delete your account at any time in Settings. We may suspend or close accounts that seriously or repeatedly break these terms, or where the law requires, and will tell you why unless the law prevents it.

10. Disclaimers

To the extent the law allows, Shelfsmith is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy of recipes, nutrition information or receipt reading, and uninterrupted availability.

11. Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, or for loss of data, arising from your use of Shelfsmith, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us for Shelfsmith in the 12 months before the claim, or US $50 if greater.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

12. Your rights as a consumer

If you live in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada or elsewhere with consumer protection laws, you have legal rights that these terms cannot take away. In Australia, our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Where these terms conflict with those rights, those rights win.

13. Changes to these terms

If we make material changes, we will tell you in the app or by email at least 30 days before they take effect. Continuing to use Shelfsmith after that means you accept the new terms; if you do not, you can delete your account.

14. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of [to be confirmed], United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If you are a consumer living outside the United States, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and may bring claims in its courts.

15. Apple App Store terms

If you downloaded Shelfsmith from Apple's App Store, you and we also agree that:
